Wrestling event fundraiser set Posted on March 9, 2016 0 Upper Sandusky Middle School will host an area wrestling tournament with proceeds going toward the eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C. Wrestlers up to age 14 are eligible to compete in the inaugural Cory Washburn Memorial Tournament at 10 a.m. Sunday. There is a $15 entry fee for early registration with a Friday deadline. The fee increases to $20 for late registration. The tournament is limited to 300 wrestlers. All registrations must have the entry fee attached, with the exception of call-in entries from an individual’s coach. Weigh-ins will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the middle school. Coaches may call in weights for wrestlers farther than 20 miles from the site or email them to bithornton@live.com. There will be five age divisions in the tournament: 6 and under, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14. Weight classes will be determined later. The tournament director reserves the right to combine weight classes or divisions. The tournament will follow a modified high school, double-elimination format. Matches will have two 1 1/2-minute periods starting in the up position. Overtimes will be sudden victory. Individuals who place first will receive a plaque, with second-, third- and fourth-place winners receiving medals. Coaches may group a minimum of 15 athletes on a team. Team awards will be given for first, second and third place. Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m. with a 9:30 a.m. check-in time. Athletes may compete in T-shirts and shorts or singlets. Sweats are not permitted. Admission to the tournament is $5. Children under age 5 will be admitted for free. Concessions will be served.
