Farmer, Woodland, Row named All-Ohioans

Riverdale’s Addie Farmer and Mohawk’s Katie Woodland were named All-Ohio second-team selections, while Carey’s Rylee Row received honorable mention in Division IV as released Tuesday by the Ohio High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association.

Several other area players received All-Northwest District honors.

A junior, Farmer played shortstop, pitcher and first base for the Falcons.

“Addie puts a lot of time into the game,” coach Brett Farmer said. “That kind of work really pays dividends once we start the high school season, so I’m happy for her to see that work pay off.”

Farmer was the top hitter in the area with a .606 average. Batting near the top of the order, she turned that into 38 runs scored.

A high average hitter the last couple of seasons, this year she began to display more power, posting a 1.085 slugging percentage with three home runs, three triples and 13 doubles. She did not strike out in 82 plate appearances.

“Last year, she was in the lineup right next to a pretty good player [sister Brenna Farmer] hitting right around her there in front of her or behind her, so when that player graduates, that kind of increases the focus that teams can put on Addie,” coach Farmer said. “Now, she’s a junior, so I expected she would step up and be able to handle that. It’s fair that she did that. People pitched to her more carefully than anyone else in our lineup, and she was still able to be on base a lot and probably the biggest step forward was the way that she slugged. Her power numbers, her slugging percentage, surely took a step forward this year even though she was the opposing pitch caller and pitcher certainly had a star by her name.”

As a pitcher, Farmer was overpowering when she hit her spots, going 5-7 with a 5.48 ERA with 113 strikeouts in 76 2/3 innings.

As a senior in the upcoming season, Farmer will take on an even bigger role.

“Now you’ve risen to where you’re going to be in our team of seniors, and we’re fortunate to have an experienced group — not just Addie, but a whole handful of kids who have been in our lineup for a few years. That responsibility just cranks up one step further, helping to bring along younger players in our program to help them kind of then be ready to make that ascension. That’s what having a program is about, and so I will look to Addie. I’ll challenge her to make that a priority at the same time as concentrating on her own performance and I expect that she’ll do that just fine.”

Woodland burst onto the scene in a big way as a freshman, earning Northern 10 Athletic Conference player of the year honors ahead of her All-Ohio selection.

“That’s a pretty big deal,” Mohawk coach Mindy Walton said. “She exceeded all of my expectations this year. I’m not sure that I’ve ever had a freshman come in as well prepared for varsity as she was. I’m excited to see where her future takes her. She’s a really hard worker and puts a lot of time in the offseason and really prepared herself for this season.”

Woodland posted a .570 average with huge power numbers. She hit eight home runs and set the school record for RBIs in a season with 57. She also stole 10 bases and scored 45 runs.

“She’s done a lot of work with her dad training hitting wise, and she plays a lot of travel ball,” Walton said. “Just putting that time in, and mentally, that’s a big thing to be able to do what she did this season. It’s just a lot of work in her skill area and mentally preparing as well.”

Exceeding her offensive numbers from this past season will be hard to do in the future, so much of the focus on her improvement this offseason will be defensively. Woodland played third base this year, but Walton said she would like to see her develop the skills to play shortstop.

“I know that we sat down together and made some goals for next year at the end of our season, and one thing she is going to work on is to be a little more skilled defensively,” Walton said. “Her offensive game is pretty solid, so we’ll see how she responds to that. I’d see her improving at either third base or shortstop next year. That’s what she’s going to put her focus.”

Row helped Carey get to within one win of state with a big offensive senior season. She batted .414 with two home runs and 30 RBIs. She also stole 10 bases and scored 30 runs.

Her power also was on display with her 10 doubles, along with four triples that also showed her speed and athleticism. As the team’s primary catcher, she made only two errors.

Also the primary backup pitcher, Row went 1-1 with a 5.15 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 36 2/3 innings in the circle.

All three All-Ohioans were selected to the All-Northwest district first team, along with Mohawk’s Emily Brickner.

Also a freshman, Brickner played second base and batted .478 with 23 RBIs, nine stolen bases 38 runs scored. Her 11 walks and 43 hits gave her a .529 on-base percentage.

Second-team honors went to Upper Sandusky’s Madison Hart in Division III and Mohawk’s Aubrey Gottfried in Division IV.

A sophomore outfielder, shortstop and catcher, Hart hit .402 with three home runs, 13 doubles and 25 RBIs. She also scored 19 runs.

Gottfried, another of Mohawk’s impressive freshman class, was 19-4 with a 1.57 ERA and 165 strikeouts in 138 innings pitched. She also made a huge impact with her bat, hitting .389 with two home runs, 11 doubles, 22 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

Honorable mention went to Wynford’s Brooke Frombaugh and Upper Sandusky’s Hope Morris in Division III, along with Carey’s Mackenzie Simons, Kyla Orians and Kynlee Phillips, Mohawk’s Mallory Brickner and Riverdale’s Miranda Miller in Division IV.

Frombaugh, a freshman catcher, debuted with a .442 average, one home run, 10 doubles, two triples and 32 RBIs while stealing seven bases and scoring 25 runs.

Morris, a junior catcher and outfielder, batted .382 with two home runs, seven doubles, 16 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

Simons, a senior pitcher, went 17-9 with a 2.48 ERA and 168 strikeouts in 147 innings. She also was a .379 hitter with 11 doubles and 21 RBIs.

Phillips, a senior first baseman, batted a team-best .440 with five doubles, a triple and 25 RBIs while also scoring 24 runs.

Orians, a senior catcher, outfielder and designated player, had a .369 average with three doubles and 23 RBIs.

Mallory Brickner, a freshman catcher, batted .39t with seven doubles, one triple, one home run, 20 RBIs and 32 runs scored.

Miller, a senior center fielder, posted a .373 average with six doubles, two triples, 18 RBIs and 27 runs scored.
