Upper girls, Baldwin advance to regionals

GALION — Upper Sandusky’s girls team and Abe Baldwin qualified for regionals in the district cross country meet Saturday at Amann Park.

The Rams girls finished third with 83 points, only 10 behind runner-up Shelby. Lexington won with 54 points. Bellevue was the final of four team qualifiers with 122 points.

Three Upper Sandusky girls finished well enough to qualify individually if they had not advanced with their team. Hope Morris took fifth place in 19:58.70, Jocelyn Leightey finished 12th in 20;42.54, and Shiloh Shasteen was 15th in 20:57.14. Rounding out the team score were Abbi Ault in 28th place in 22:28.88 and Macie Clark in 30th place in 22:40.37.

Port Clinton’s Morgan Wiechman was the winner in 18:55.52.

Upper Sandusky’s boys missed advancing as a team by one place, finishing fifth with 128 points. Bellevue took the final spot with 116 points. Lexington dominated with all five of its scoring runners in the top seven for just 19 points, while Ontario was second with 88 points and Edison third with 107 points.

Baldwin cracked the top 16 to qualify for regionals by taking 14th place in 17:11.91. The team’s next four runners were within six places of one another. Henry Minehart finished 26th in 17:52.12, one spot in front of Franklin Arnold, who finished in 17:52.65. Andrew Leightey was 30th in 18:00.87, and Jameson Reile finished 31st in 18:03.50.

Lexington’s Latrell Hughes was the winner in 15:33.96.

In Division III, with 20 individuals and five teams advancing, Wynford’s Briana Westrick was 30th in 22:19.79, while Allie Bessinger took 33rd place in 22:31.13. Kolbie Allgyre finished 74th in 27:28.13.

Danbury’s Emma Redett was the individual winner in 19:08.69.

Huron was the Division III girls champion with a 40-71 margin over Ashland Crestview. Norwalk St. Paul edged Edison for third 131-135, and Mansfield Christian took fifth place with 153 points.

Wynford’s boys were 12th in the team standings with 296 points. Colonel Crawford won the championship 46-64 over Huron, with Bucyrus (88 points), New London (97) and Ashland Crestview (117) also advancing to regionals.

Brennen Westrick paced the Royals with a 49th-place finish in 19:47.63. Seth Pope (20:52.14) and Drew Pope (21:41.79) were 60th and 69th, respectively. Clay Lusk took 74th place in 21:57.51, and Ashton Tarbert was 76th in 22:26.52.

Huron’s Sage Edgerly-Bork won the Division III boys race in 16:02.39.

The regional cross country meet starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the Division II boys and girls races set for 12 and 12:45 p.m. at Hedges Boyer Park in Tiffin.
