Acreage reporting dates changed

All producers are reminded that the acreage reporting date for fall-seeded crops has changed and the acreage reporting date is Dec. 15. This applies to all fall-seeded crops including fall barley, fall wheat and all other fall-seeded small grains. Call to schedule an appointment to certify wheat crops.

Tree windbreak program available

BUCYRUS — The Northwest Ohio Windbreak Program is a great opportunity for landowners to establish tree windbreaks in the county to help reduce soil erosion, control drifting snow and improve wildlife habitat. The program is offered through the ODNR Division of Forestry and provides assistance with planning and planting windbreaks.

Upper Sandusky takes 10th in forestry

10th in state featured

Earlier this month the Upper Sandusky FFA took 10th place as a team in the State Forestry Career Development Event held at Hocking College in Nelsonville. The Forestry CDE involves many different activities related to the forest and forest products industry in Ohio that vary from year to year.

Carey FFA takes part in soil judging competition

CAREY — Members of the Carey FFA chapter recently participated in the County Soils Career Development Event held southeast of Upper Sandusky. In this competition, students textured different layers of the soil to determine their texture, viewed the soil profile in pits to find traits of the soil, and determined the slope of the land.

County soil judging contests held recently

County contest

The Wyandot County Soil Judging Contest took place Sept. 21 on the farm of Jim Smalley just east of Upper Sandusky. Agriculture students from four county schools competed in two different soil judging contests, the agriculture (rural) contest and the urban contest. In the agriculture contest, students evaluate soil for land use and limitations for crop growth and have to select best management practices to overcome limitations found.

Crawford SWCD holds annual meeting

BUCYRUS — The Crawford Soil and Water Conservation District recently held its 73rd annual meeting at Pickwick Place. One of the main events at the meeting is the SWCD board of supervisor’s election. Paul E. Hartschuh was elected to the Crawford SWCD Board of Supervisors for a three-year term beginning Jan. 1.
