Residents of Wyandot County will have two choices for county commissioner on their ballot Nov. 6. Incumbent Republican Ron Metzger looks to hold off Democratic challenger Jon Oberhauser.

The Upper Sandusky Exempted Village School District is hoping voters again will approve a 1.25 percent income tax during Tuesday’s general election. It is not a new tax and has been on the books for years. Two separate taxes were combined into one over a decade ago, Superintendent Laurie Vent said.

The Upper Sandusky Community Library held a special open house during its operating hours Monday to debut its new Adventure Central program. Adventure Central allows anyone with a USCL library card to check out unorthodox items from the library ranging from telescopes, musical instruments, metal detectors, sewing machines and more.

Voters will have the opportunity to select the 87th District State Representative on Nov. 6. The 87th District is comprised of Wyandot, Crawford and Morrow counties as well as parts of Seneca and Marion counties. The current options are incumbent Riordan McClain (R) and challenger Mary Pierce-Broadwater (D).

CAREY — Carey Exempted Village Schools will once again ask voters to renew a five-year, 1 percent income tax renewal levy on the Nov. 6 ballot. The five-year, 1 percent income tax levy was originally passed by voters in November 2004, was renewed in November 2008 and again in May 2014.

It may be small wonder that Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’s yacht was vandalized here in our state. Ohio’s college students face the largest aggregate debt of anywhere in the country. We are 45th in college affordability. As a mentor to young people for over 15 years, these matters concern me deeply.

An astounding number of Americans, no matter our political views, agree that we are tired of big corporations and special interests controlling our government. Most Congressional 5th District residents aren’t millionaires but want to make a good living and have a good life. The influence of money in politics ensures that power stays in the hands of only the richest Americans, leaving the rest of us to hope that someone is looking out for our interests.
