No contact order for man accused of sex with girl, 14

A judge ordered a 21-year-old Carey man accused of having sex with a 14-year-old girl to have no contact with the girl or any juveniles to whom he is not related while he awaits trial. Devon S. Layfield pleaded not guilty to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, a fourth-degree felony, and sexual imposition, a third-degree misdemeanor, Monday in Wyandot County County Common Pleas Court.

PD: Mentally ill man slaps sheriff, credit union worker

A mentally ill Upper Sandusky man slapped Wyandot County Sheriff Mike Hetzel and a credit union employee in their faces Monday, police said. Holden M. Nance, 19, of Nantucket Drive, walked in to Quest Federal Credit Union around 12:30 p.m. and slapped a female employee in her face, according to an Upper Sandusky police report.

Firefighters from Marseilles and Pitt Township responded to a mower that caught fire Monday afternoon in the 10,000 block of CH 77 near TH 108. The resident was riding the mower when she noticed flames between the blade deck and the engine.

The Carey Volunteer Fire Department extinguished an SUV engine fire on Ohio 15 near TH 95, Ridge Township, the night of April 3. The driver reported he observed smoke coming from the engine, so he pulled over and opened the hood, and flames shot out of the engine.

Lee, Fort Worth, Texas, was arrested for physical control and cited for possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle the afternoon of April 2 after a caller reported two individuals throwing empty beer cans out of a truck with Texas plates parked at a pond on private property near CH 108 and CH 47, Salem Township.

$25,000 donation

A donation from a descendent of a former Upper Sandusky clerk and councilman will fund an impending project to light the Wyandot County Courthouse tower at night. William West, 86, of Denver, Colorado, recently gave $25,000 for renovations to the building where his grandfather’s notes are preserved.
