FFA chapters attend convention

INDIANAPOLIS — The Upper Sandusky, Carey, Mohawk and Riverdale FFA chapters recently attended the 89th National FFA Convention. The 12 Upper Sandusky High School students who attended the National Convention were Jacob Newsome, Monte Boes, Nick Stuckey, Weston Foust, Alec Ogg, Noah Cheney, Elijah Verdugo, Cali Andres, Grace Sayre, Hannah Ziegler, Rylee Goodman and Niki Young.

FSA reminds producers of approaching NAP deadlines for 2017 crops

The Wyandot County Farm Service Agency is reminding producers who are interested in the 2017 Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program of the need to apply for coverage by the following crop deadline dates. The deadline for 2017 NAP coverage is Nov. 20 for apples, asparagus, blueberries, caneberries, cherries, chestnuts, forage for hay and pasture, grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums, strawberries, honey, maple sap and hops.

Ohio’s traditional deer-gun hunting season begins Nov. 28

COLUMBUS — Deer hunting is a popular activity for sportsmen statewide, and Ohio’s white-tailed deer continue to provide hunters across the state with opportunities for success as they head out into the field. Ohio’s deer-gun season opens Nov. 28. Hunting remains the most effective management tool for maintaining Ohio’s healthy deer population, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

$44,000 in scholarships to be awarded

WORTHINGTON — The Ohio Soybean Council Foundation recently announced scholarship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students for the 2017-18 academic year. The scholarship program encourages undergraduate and graduate students at Ohio colleges and universities to pursue degrees in one of the many academic fields that support the future of the soybean industry, including agriculture, business, communications, economics, education, engineering, science and technology.

Election Day

Nicole Garvin brought her nearly 4-year-old daughter, Caroline, to the polls to learn about her civic duty to vote this Election Day. Polls will remain open until 7:30 p.m.

Safety committee grapples with 3 approved 5K routes

The Upper Sandusky safety committee unanimously approved a route for the Home for the Holidays 5K after a request by organizer Kelsey Stief during its regular meeting Monday. Stief said runners will start at 9 a.m. Dec. 3 at John Stewart United Methodist Church, where the Upper Sandusky Rotary Club will host a pancake breakfast.

Carey Council votes to double pay

CAREY — Carey Council approved the first reading of an ordinance to double the pay of council members during a regular meeting Monday. A proposal introduced by council member Chad Kin at the Oct. 17 meeting would increase council wages from $2,000 annually to $4,000 a year.

Administrator hospitalized

CAREY — Roy Johnson, administrator for the village of Carey, was admitted to intensive care at a Findlay hospital on Monday evening. Johnson was absent from a regular council meeting that began at 7 p.m. due to an illness, Mayor Armand Getz said.
