SYCAMORE — Students in the Mohawk Local School District headed back to school today, and the school board on Monday heard updates on two capital improvements projects that are expected to be complete in the coming months. Superintendent Ken Ratliff said the school district is upgrading its home bleacher section at the football field for handicap accessibility.

BUCYRUS — The Wynford Board of Education received some good news on Monday night. During its regular meeting, the board not only learned from Superintendent Steve Mohr that the district not only received an increase of $500,000 in state funding for the upcoming school year, but the district also received a $200,000 21st Century grant for intervention and activities in grades K-12.

Area residents have less than a week to visit the Upper Sandusky swimming pool, and by the time it reopens next spring, a renovation project to upgrade the men’s and women’s bath areas is expected to be complete. The project, which could begin as early as next month, will bring the bath areas up to Americans with Disabilities Act standards, zoning inspector Dave Westbrook said.

WHARTON — A Mount Blanchard youth escaped serious injury in a rollover crash Monday afternoon. Police said Briana Digby, 16, was traveling westbound on TH 79 northwest of Wharton when she topped a hill with a slight curve and lost control.

With the purchase of six more Chromebook carts, the Upper Sandusky Exempted Village School District now will have a ratio of about one for every two students. Superintendent Laurie Vent said at Monday night’s school board meeting the district used a $68,152 donation, designated for technology, from the will of Ronald Myers to make the purchase.

Upper Sandusky City Council has taken the first step toward implementation of wind energy system regulations for individuals and businesses wanting to install that form of renewable energy within city limits. After months of research by Councilwoman Roxie Karg and guidance from law director Mark Ellis, council heard the first reading of the new ordinance during a regular meeting Monday.

CAREY — The village of Carey’s newest police officer will begin in about a month, and is paid for by a private donation. Ace, a male German shepherd, is training to be a drug-sniffing dog with his handler Officer Sutton Flick. The village received a $30,000 donation for the specific purpose of getting and training a police dog....

Eligible producers now formally may enroll in the Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage programs for 2014 and 2015, the U.S. Department of Agricultural has announced. The enrollment period began June 17 and will end Sept. 30.
