Family starts petition to require signs for dams labeled ‘drowning machines’

Memorial

The family of a pair of brothers who drowned in a Father’s Day accident on a low-head dam near Upper Sandusky has created a petition in an attempt to change the laws in the state and nation and require signs above and below the dams that are known as “deadly,” “death traps” and “drowning machines.” Since 2013, accidents have claimed the lives of three men on two occasions at a low-head dam on the southeast side of Upper Sandusky.

Reports shed light on latest dam fatalities

Reports by the Upper Sandusky Police Department released this week tell the grisly details of the drowning deaths of two Bucyrus men at a low-head dam near Upper Sandusky and the response by local authorities. Lewis Zornes, 46, and Billy Zornes, 45, both died in the June 21 accident. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found access to the low-head dam was only available from behind a fenced-in area. None of the first responders had the right key, and at least two officers scaled the fence before running to the river, according to the USPD reports.
