Holly voted All-DC-U top player

Upper Sandusky’s Jess Holly was named the All-Daily Chief-Union volleyball player of the year, and the Rams’ Matthew McConnaughey and Carey’s Eric Vackert shared coach of the year honors. Holly is joined on the All-DC-U first team by teammates Molly Owens and Emma Smith, Carey’s Shelby Kin and Sydney Wentling and Wynford’s Alyssa Harrer.

Three area athletes were named to All-Ohio teams, announced Sunday by the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association. Upper Sandusky’s Jess Holly was a first-team all-state honoree in Division II, and Carey’s Sydney Wentling and Shelby Kin were second-team honorees in Division IV.

Helbert wins co-coach of year honors; Royals put 7 on N10 1st team

Wynford’s Gabe Helbert was the Northern 10 Athletic Conference co-coach of the year, and the Royals placed seven players on the All-N10 first team. Wentz takes 21st place at state

HEBRON — Looking at the time clock as she crossed the finish line, Carey’s Keely Wentz surprised herself with how well she ran in Saturday’s Division III girls state cross country championship race. Competing in her first state meet, the Blue Devils freshman surpassed her own expectations, finishing 21st overall, earning All-Ohio honors with a time of 19:22.4 at National Trail Raceway.

Carey boys finish 10th at state

HEBRON — After two years of running the state cross country meet as a lone competitor, Carey junior Trevor Cook was not alone in Saturday’s race. It was a team affair for the Blue Devils, who finished 10th on a cool, crisp fall day at National Trail Raceway in Hebron in the Division III boys state cross country race.

BUCYRUS — In the first quarter Saturday night, it seemed top-seeded Wynford might have little problem with eighth-seeded Delta in the first round of the Division VI, Region 20 playoffs, but the Panthers made a huge stop that eventually turned the entire game.

All-District 6 teams loaded with area volleyball players

All-District 6 volleyball selections recently were announced, and 14 area athletes were honored in Divisions II, III and IV. Upper Sandusky seniors Jess Holly, Emma Smith, Molly Owens and Taven Wentling were named all-district in Division II. In Division III, Mohawk’s Mya Morris and Chelsey Trusty, Wynford’s Alyssa Harrer and Rhieannae Cory and Riverdale’s Carrol Pauley and Taylor Farmer were recognized, and Carey’s Shelby Kin, Sydney Kin, Sydney Wentling and Hannah Zimmerman were named all-district in Division IV.
