ATTICA — As scrappy as ever on defense and at times equally potent on offense, the Mohawk volleyball team was doing almost everything it needed to pull an upset of top-seeded Edison.

FINDLAY — Riverdale seemed to be in control for most of the first half Wednesday night against Ashland Crestview in a Division III girls soccer district semifinal match, but the Falcons could not score. Finally, Riverdale got a late first-half goal and then dominated the second half to grab a 3-0 victory.

Riverdale’s Justin Riegle, Joe Lauck and Kyle Evans and Upper Sandusky’s Taylor Emerick all were named to the All-North Central Ohio Soccer Association boys soccer first team. Second-team honors went to Riverdale’s Josh Hunter and Nathaniel Hughes and Upper Sandusky’s Sam Duress and Austin Myers.

Riverdale’s Taylor Frey and Gabi Rodriguez, Upper Sandusky’s Grace Miller and Mohawk’s Ally Weinandy all were named to the All-North Central Ohio Soccer Association girls soccer first team. Second-team honors went to Riverdale’s Aubreah Manns and Sydney Holderman and Upper Sandusky’s Abigail Gerber and Megan Hensel and Mohawk’s Cambria Kohlenberg.

COLLINS — Mohawk felt like it had something to prove Saturday, and it certainly did it. The No. 6 seed Warriors dominated No. 5 Western Reserve at times and earned a sweep, 25-18, 25-15, 25-22, to win its sixth straight sectional championship.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — Gabi Rodriguez and Aubreah Manns each scored two goals as Riverdale won easily, 5-1, against Mansfield Christian in a Division III sectional final soccer match Saturday.

LANCASTER — Upper Sandusky’s Troy Mawer, Justin Herring and Emma Brown all received medals for their performances Saturday in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Middle School/Junior High Invitational at Lancaster High School.

ST. HENRY — The state’s top-ranked team in Division III, St. Henry, had no trouble in a sectional final match, defeating Riverdale, 25-6, 25-6, 25-10, on Saturday. The unbeaten and top-seeded Redskins (23-0) advance to the district semifinals and will face No. 8 seed Fort Recovery, which swept No. 6 Parkway.

OTTAWA — Riverdale’s Antonio Renteria missed regional qualifying by two places, finishing 18th in district competition Saturday at Ottawa Park. Renteria finished in 17:56.2.

For many people, Friday night football is an exciting tradition — one marked by the sounds of marching bands, the smell of fall and intense action on the field. Prior to hosting Colonel Crawford on Friday night, Upper Sandusky honored someone for whom Friday night football carries with it a very different tradition.
