Upper Sandusky boys, girls win 5-team meet at Marion YMCA

MARION — Upper Sandusky’s boys and girls both were first Wednesday night in a five-team meet hosted by Mount Gilead at the Marion YMCA. The Rams girls nearly doubled up second-place Lima Senior, 646-328, with Marion Harding third with 236 points, Mount Gilead fourth with 155 points and Ridgedale fifth with 40 points.

Rams open wrestling season with 2 wins

GALION — The Upper Sandusky wrestling team opened its season with a pair of wins, 40-28 against Mansfield Senior and 42-36 against Northmor, in a tri-match Wednesday evening at Northmor. Four different Rams wrestlers finished with pins in both of their matches, led by Noah Clary at 160 pounds, who needed just 30 and 59 seconds to win against Mansfield Senior and Northmor, respectively.

Upper MS to collect food

Union Elementary and Middle School is hosting its annual canned food drive with a goal of collecting 1,000 items or dollars for local food pantries. In an effort to build on the 300 items already collected, admission to the Rams girls basketball game against Wynford on Tuesday will be one canned good item.

BUCYRUS — In the first three games of the season, teams made sure Sydney Wentling did not beat them — and for good reason. She is the reigning Northern 10 Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

SYCAMORE — It wasn’t pretty, but the Bucyrus girls basketball team will take a win on the road any way it can get it, especially in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference. The Redmen shot only 34 percent from the field and a dismal 43 percent from the free-throw line, but it was good enough to squeak by the Mohawk Warriors, 50-42, on Tuesday night.

Upper junior high teams win 3 of 4

Upper Sandusky’s eighth grade girls basketball team raced out to a 20-3 first quarter lead on its way to a 49-19 victory against Bucyrus on Tuesday. Chloe Taylor led the Rams with 12 points, while Jadyn Smalley and Reagan Ward each scored nine.

Wynford takes top spots on All-DC-U football team

Wynford’s Zach Hoffman and Gabe Helbert earned top honors on the All-Daily Chief-Union football team, being voted coach and player of the year, respectively. Seven of Hoffman’s teammates join him on the All-DC-U team, which is voted on by DC-U sports writers. Voters were asked to vote for the top 25 players.

CAREY — Upper Sandusky outscored Carey in every quarter on its way to a 74-61 road win over the Blue Devils on Saturday. Four Rams scored in double figures in the Northern 10 Athletic Conference opener. “They’re the best team in our league, hands down,” Carey coach Jaime Young said.
