NEW WASHINGTON — A year ago, in the last week of the high school football regular season, Mohawk had an outside shot at making the playoffs before Buckeye Central marched into Sycamore and dealt the Warriors a 41-8 loss. Friday, the Warriors flipped the script against a Bucks team that controlled its playoff destiny.

Western Reserve Academy played an inspired game Friday night to defeat Upper Sandusky, 29-23. The Rams held a two-possession lead late in the third quarter, but the Pioneers overcame adversity to earn the win following the leadership of junior Andrew McCaffrey.

BUCYRUS — Wynford took advantage of a mistake-prone Bucyrus football team Friday night. Capitalizing on four turnovers, the Royals scored on eight of their first nine possessions in the first half to close the regular season with a 56-7 rout of their cross-town rivals at home in a Northern 10 game.

CAREY — In seasons like the one the Carey football team went through, sometimes moral victories are important. The Blue Devils hung tough with Colonel Crawford well into the second half to finish a difficult season on a somewhat positive note despite a 48-14 loss to the Eagles on Friday night.

MOUNT BLANCHARD — It was a chilly night at D. Ray Baum Field, but it was hard to tell from the way Riverdale played. The Falcons played a four-quarter team game, posting a dominant 34-13 win against Arcadia on Friday night.

Upper Sandusky’s Jess Holly was the player of the year, and Matthew McConnaughey was the coach of the year in a release of the All-Northern 10 Athletic Conference volleyball team Thursday. The Rams and Carey combined to take six of the eight All-N10 first-team spots.

FOSTORIA — While Toledo Christian earned a sweep in a Division IV volleyball district final Thursday night, Carey had a chance to win each set, but losing probably hurt the most in the first set of a 28-26, 25-22, 25-23 loss at Fostoria.

ATTICA — As scrappy as ever on defense and at times equally potent on offense, the Mohawk volleyball team was doing almost everything it needed to pull an upset of top-seeded Edison.

FINDLAY — Riverdale seemed to be in control for most of the first half Wednesday night against Ashland Crestview in a Division III girls soccer district semifinal match, but the Falcons could not score. Finally, Riverdale got a late first-half goal and then dominated the second half to grab a 3-0 victory.

Riverdale’s Justin Riegle, Joe Lauck and Kyle Evans and Upper Sandusky’s Taylor Emerick all were named to the All-North Central Ohio Soccer Association boys soccer first team. Second-team honors went to Riverdale’s Josh Hunter and Nathaniel Hughes and Upper Sandusky’s Sam Duress and Austin Myers.
