GALION — Wynford won its third straight Northern 10 Athletic Conference Shootout to strengthen its lead to two games over Upper Sandusky in the overall standings with a 169-173 margin over the Rams on Wednesday at Valley View Golf Course.

The Rams’ Brock Montgomery medaled for the fourth time in five shootouts and did so by three strokes with an even-par 36, but the Royals got big performances from freshman Clay Rogers and senior Drew Johnson.

Rogers posted the day’s second-best score of 39, two strokes better than anyone else besides Montgomery. Wes Prenger was one of the players tied for third at 41, and Johnson shot a season-best 42 to finish fifth overall. Briar Ridge and Dawson Pelter both had 47s to complete the score for Wynford, which dropped Owen Prenger’s 50.

“Wynford golf just gets it done,” Upper Sandusky coach Graham Treadway said. “They play solid 1-6. That being said, if we make putts, we are right there.”

Cy Young tied for eight place with his 45. Arden Stansbery and Seth Smith were one stroke back with 46s. David Gibson and Gage Thiel both had 47s that did not count in the team total.

“Brock continues to play his game,” Treadway said. “His level of focus on every shot is the key to success. Gage Thiel has it coming on. He is gonna be a nice player.”

Carey finished fourth at 184, one stroke behind Colonel Crawford at 183, and two strokes ahead of fifth-place Mohawk at 186. That keeps the Blue Devils in third place overall but eight points out of first.

Andrew Resendez and Porter McLaughlin both had top-10 finishes for the Blue Devils with 45s, with Chase Mullholand a stroke back at 46. Landon Roberts had a 48 to complete the team total. Brody Baker’s 53 and Jordan Hertel’s 54 were dropped.

Lance Frankart led Mohawk, which is now tied with Colonel Crawford for fourth place, with a 44 that ranked sixth on the day. Hunter Haynes shot 45, Brady Hannam 46 and Cohen Rhoad 49. Braylan Mullholand (57) and Brexton Scherger (70) completed the lineup.

Colonel Crawford freshman Bryant Berry tied Wes Prenger for third with a 41. Despite a last-place finish for his team, Bucyrus junior Brody Higginbotham had a 44 to tie for sixth place.

The final N10 Shootout is 4 p.m. Monday at The Golf Club of Bucyrus ahead of the conference tournament Sept. 18 at Woody Ridge Golf Course.

Carey is back in action against Tiffin Columbian and Hopewell-Loudon at 4 p.m. today at Loudon Meadows Golf Course. Mohawk competes in the Ontario City Tournament at 9 a.m. Friday at Twin Lakes Golf Course. Upper Sandusky and Carey both are part of the Tiffin Columbian Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday at Clinton Heights Golf Course. Wynford is off until the shootout.
