She medaled with an 82 to lead the Royals to the sectional team title.Daily Chief-Union/Lonnie McMillan GALION — Jordyn Alspach was the tournament medalist to lead Wynford to the team championship in Division II girls golf sectional action at Valley View Golf Course. The Royals finished with a 395 to top runner-up Colonel Crawford, with a 399, by four strokes. Both advance to district play, along with third-place Edison, which shot a 403. Huron was a distant fourth at 433. Led by individual district qualifier Liv Gier, Upper Sandusky finished at 462. The Eagles defeated the Royals by 11 and 27 strokes in two nine-hole matchups during the regular season and then by 65 strokes in the 18-hole Northern 10 Athletic Conference tournament, but this time was very different. Alspach led the way by shooting a 43 on the front nine and then a 39 on the back nine to finish with an 82 despite cool, soggy conditions. She finished one stroke better than medalist runner-up Sarah Hoak of Plymouth with an 83. Colonel Crawford’s Lucy Myers was third with an 85. Wynford had consistent scores after that, starting with Melanie Johnson’s 100 that tied for ninth overall. Kyliana Bennett shot a 105, and Rylee Robinson contributed a 108. Emi Schuster’s 177 was dropped. Eden Morris capped off her career with a 116, while Alayna Huff shot a 125. Both Ellie Dible and Kendall Van Horn had 132s. Johnson’s round of 100 ranked ninth during tough conditions in Division II sectional tournament action.Daily Chief-Union/Lonnie McMillan “I’m proud of this team for keeping a positive attitude while playing through brutal conditions,” Upper Sandusky coach Mindy Newell said. “It’s not easy to play in pouring rain with cold temperatures.” The tournament was delayed for one hour during some of the worst of the rain with still four holes to be played. Hoak and Gier took the first two individual district qualifying spots with ease. The third one went to Galion’s Julia Conner with a 100. Huron’s Malena Fantozzi matched her score but was not present at the end of the tournament and forfeited a playoff opportunity for the final place in the district tournament. Colonel Crawford’s Sophie Beck finished with a 91 that ranked fifth on the day, but the Eagles’ next two scores of 107 and 116 were outdone by the Royals. The Division II girls golf district tournament is 9 a.m. Monday at Sycamore Springs Golf Course.
