Curbside lanes in downtown Upper now for golf carts only Posted on April 1, 2017 0 Wyandot County and Upper Sandusky law enforcement officials disagree about whether golf carts should be driven on the street with cars, and it may hit drivers in their wallets. Sheriff Mike Hetzel said deputies will ticket drivers and immediately tow all golf carts they see driving on Upper Sandusky streets. Violators will face a $100 fine. Hetzel said he made the decision because it was the safe thing to do. “There are already places in the city designated for golf carts and that’s Stone Crossing and Lincoln Hills (golf courses),” Hetzel said. “They shouldn’t interfere with the flow of traffic in the city of Upper Sandusky.” Hetzel said deputies will enforce his ruling despite the city safety committee’s decision in January to decrease the speed limit from 45-35 mph on East Wyandot Avenue, between Duck Pond Road and Malabar Drive, to allow low-speed vehicles like golf carts to continue to operate after a state law to ban such vehicles from operating on roadways with speed limits greater than 35 mph went into effect at the beginning of the year. Upper Sandusky police Capt. Dan Ross said he agrees with Hetzel, but his hands are tied. To keep the golf cart drivers safe, Ross announced Friday that the curbside lanes on the four-lane stretch of Wyandot Avenue from Warpole Avenue to Fifth Street and on Sandusky Avenue between Hicks and Bigelow streets are for golf carts only. Drivers of cars caught in the outside lanes will be ticketed and fined $100, effective immediately. Officers will not give any warnings. Ross made the decision himself while Chief David Olds was away for a two-day training. “With all the sewer line construction going on, they shouldn’t be driving those golf carts around the city,” Hetzel said. “They are driving in construction areas. A sinkhole could open up and the cart could fall right in. Then we’d lose a golf and people.” Editor’s note: Happy April Fool’s Day from the staff at The Daily Chief-Union.
