Treva E. Bakies

CAREY — Treva E. Bakies, 97, of Carey, died at 8:05 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2020, at her residence with her family by her side.
Born Nov. 21, 1922, in Wyandot County, she was a daughter of Lee and Florence (Farthing) Rickle.
On Aug. 19, 1942, Treva married John M. Bakies in Angola, Indiana. John left for the service the following day and Treva moved to Detroit, Michigan, to become a “Rosie the Riveter.”
In 1943 she moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to work at Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Corporation. Like the majority of her coworkers, she was unaware of the purpose of her work within what would later be known as the Manhattan Project. Treva worked inside the “Secret City,” which built the atom bomb that helped end World War II. Upon John’s return from the European Theatre, they settled back home in Wyandot County. She and John enjoyed almost 60 years together. John passed away March 29, 2002.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara S. (Reginald F., Jr.) Williams, Upper Sandusky; a granddaughter, Lindsay M. (Bradley Scherzer) Williams, Toledo; a sister, Betty Bardon, Channahon, Illinois; four Rickle in-laws: Jackie, Mary, Ilah and Phyllis Rickle; and four Bakies in-laws: Grover “Jr” Bakies, James (Shirley) Bakies, Anna Mae Draper and Joyce Bakies.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; a grandson, Matthew J. Williams; a sister, Bernita Runion; eight brothers: Dale, Harold, Howard, Leonard, Dick, Dwight, Wayne and Bill Rickle; and two infant sisters: Irene and Pauline Rickle.
Treva was a 1940 graduate of Wharton High School. She retired in 1985 from General Electric in Tiffin after 36 years.
She was a member of the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey and the Parish Rosary Altar Society. She also was a member of the Quarter Century Club of General Electric.
Throughout her life, Treva enjoyed bowling, reading, gardening, shopping with her good friend Gerry and spending time with her family.
Friends will be received 1-5 p.m. Sunday at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home in Carey. A Rosary service will be at the conclusion of visitation. A Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. Monday, March 2, 2020, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, with the Rev. Tom Merrill, OFM Conv, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Carey.
