3 Falcons combine for shutout Posted on April 29, 2024 0 MOUNT BLANCHARD — Three Riverdale pitchers combined for a 6-0 shutout of McComb in Blanchard Valley Conference baseball play Monday at Riverdale. Evan Reiter gave up four hits and one walk with 10 strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings, keeping his pitch count low enough to return Wednesday. Alex Russler struck out one in an inning of work, and Gauge King allowed two hits with four strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. The Falcons (14-3, 4-2 BVC) scored three times in the second inning to take the lead, added two runs in the fourth inning and scored once more in the fifth. King singled and had three RBIs. Evan Reiter walked twice and scored two runs. Loukas Carter had a hit and an RBI and scored twice. “The coaches were talking before the game, something we’ve stressed a lot before the season started with the kids was finding a way to walk or just put the ball in play and get on more times than we strikeout,” Riverdale coach Drew Bostic said. Riverdale hitters have walked 138 times and struck out 108 times. The Falcons’ pitchers have 152 strikeouts and just 29 walks. “The pitchers are doing a really good job of keeping us in the game,” Bostic said. “… Our pitching staff is doing an excellent job of not giving up free bases. We’ve won the strikeout-to-walk ratio with our pitching staff versus theirs.” Parker Downing singled and doubled for McComb (5-9, 0-4 BVC). Blake Wittenmyer took the loss, giving up three earned runs on three hits and three walks with one strikeout in three innings. Riverdale hosts Bluffton at 5 p.m. today.
