BUCYRUS — Wynford’s boys won the championship, and Upper Sandusky’s program made its debut Saturday in the Northwest Ohio Bowling League Opener on Saturday at Suburban Lanes. The Royals boys finished with a total of 3,906 to top Liberty-Benton, at 3,715, by close to 200 pins. Upper Sandusky finished fifth at 3,376. Wynford was the girls runner-up to Liberty-Benton, 3,387 to 3,224. Seneca East edged Upper Sandusky for third among the seven teams 2,883 to 2,789. Royals freshman Levi McLaughlin was the top scorer individual with a three-game 693 series. He got better throughout the day, starting with a 187 and then following it up with games of 238 and 268. Upper Sandusky senior Dalton Shock set the tournament record by beginning his day with a 246 game that eventually was topped by McLaughlin. He followed with games of 199 and 168 to finish with a runner-up 613 series. Wynford’s Dawson Lykens was fourth individually with a 599 series, shooting consistent scores of 212, 186 and 201, while Garry Weisenauer was sixth with a 557 series that included a 201 in the middle game. Aiden Mason (524) and Briar Ridge (523) were 14th and 15th, individually for the Royals. Rams junior Afton Green had a 12th-place finish with a 526 series achieved through consistent games of 172, 178 and 176. Wyatt Barrett placed in the top 20 in the field with a 509 that included a 194 game to start. Clayton Bowen added a 466 series, with Rowen Kennedy rounding out the lineup by shooting 404. Shock’s three-game 613 series was second among all players in the tournament as the Rams made their varsity debut. After the individual portion of the tournament, teams competed in six Baker games, with players alternating turns for their team. Wynford was only third-best in that part with a 1,010 total, but it had built a lead plenty big enough to still win comfortably. The Royals’ top Baker game score was 194. Upper Sandusky struggled in the Baker game portion, shooting an 858 that was last among the seven teams, dropping it one spot in the standings. The Rams’ top Baker game was 162. Liberty-Benton had just a 59-pin lead on Wynford going into Baker games and was able to take first place by outscoring the Royals in that portion of the event 1,042 to 938, including 367-253 over the final two games after Wynford had cut its deficit to 51 pins. The Royals scored well with a consistent lineup, placing all of their five bowlers in the top 16. Taylor Gilliam led the way with a 486 series with solid games of 166, 160 and 160. Samantha Dornbirer (471), Addison Sebring (461) and Kendall Naufzinger (448) were 11th through 13th, with Heather Wappelhorst finishing 16th at 420. Dornbirer had Wynford’s top game of the day of 170. Freshman Brynn Routzahn and junior Olivia Griswold paced the Rams with seventh- and eighth-place finishes, scoring 474 and 473, respectively. Griswold began her day with a 211 game that was the best single-game score posted by any bowler in the tournament. Routzahn had a 179 in the middle of her series. She finished eighth among all girls with a 473 series as the Rams girls were fourth in the team standings. Hope Morris was 20th overall with a 394 series, with Lily Swartz not far behind with a 361. Michaelynn Hill had a pair of 122 games after Kloe Ealy began with a 79. Upper Sandusky finished with a 764 total in Baker games, with a top score of 146 in its final one. Liberty-Benton’s Elizabeth Nauert was the top individual girl with a 514 series. Colonel Crawford’s Kayli Vanmeter and Seneca East’s Sydney Beard both finished at 496. Wynford is back in action at 4 p.m. Tuesday with a home match against Bucyrus at Suburban Lanes. Upper Sandusky faces Colonel Crawford its first home match in program history at 4 p.m. next Monday at Wyandot Lanes.
